Biography

Natasha Borges Sugiyama, Ph.D. is Associate Professor of Political Science and Director of the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS) at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. A specialist of Brazilian politics, her research addresses the politics of poverty, including prospects for social inclusion of the poor, citizenship development, and human development. Her most recent research examines how democracy works to advance well-being, including whether Brazil’s anti-poverty programs advance women’s empowerment. She is author of two books, Democracy at Work: Pathways to Well-Being in Brazil, with Brian Wampler and Michael Touchton (Cambridge University Press, 2019) and Diffusion of Good Governance: Social Sector Reforms in Brazil (University of Notre Dame Press, 2013). Her research has also appeared in numerous journals, most recently in American Political Science Review, Comparative Politics, Latin American Politics and Society, Journal of Development Studies, and Global Social Policy.

Biography

Daniela Casale is a professor in the School of Economics and Finance at the University of the Witwatersrand. Daniela is a development economist with over twenty years of experience in the field of gender economics. Other broad areas of study include labour, well-being, health, and education. She has published widely across a variety of economics, development, and public health journals, among them, Feminist Economics, Economic Development and Cultural Change, Economics and Human Biology, Development Policy Review, Public Health Nutrition and PLOS ONE. Her most recent work on the large NIDS-CRAM data collection project highlighted how the Covid-19 pandemic has exacerbated gender inequality in South Africa.

Biography

Dr. Mildred Mushunje is a passionate and self- driven advocate for gender and social justice. She has a keen interest in women and children’s rights and is an award winner from the International Federation of Social Workers in recognition of her work on Gender Based Violence. She is the Deputy Chairperson on the Southern Africa Social Policy Experts Network and an Advisory Panel Member of the Robert Carr Foundation. She holds a Bachelors Degree in Social Work (Zimbabwe), Masters Degree in Gender and Development studies (University of Manchester) and a Doctoral Degree in Social Work from University of KwaZulu Natal (S.A).
