University of Johannesburg, South Africa | 13–16 July 2021
Theme: Poverty, Inequality and Social Development: Innovations Around the World
Hosted by the University of Johannesburg in partnership with the Centre for Social Development in Africa, the 22nd ICSD Biennial Conference took place during one of the most challenging periods in recent history, as the world continued to grapple with the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The conference examined how poverty and inequality intersect with global challenges including migration, racial injustice, climate change, economic instability and the digital divide. It provided an international platform for researchers, practitioners, policymakers, students and community organisations to critically reflect on existing approaches while showcasing innovative solutions to advance social justice and inclusive development.
Across a diverse programme of presentations and discussions, delegates explored topics including climate change, youth employment, gender equality, financial capability, governance, social innovation and the future of social development. The conference reinforced ICSD’s commitment to evidence-informed practice, interdisciplinary collaboration and developing practical solutions to improve the wellbeing of individuals, families and communities worldwide.
