Prof Manohar Pawar

Biography
Manohar Pawar is professor of social work at the School of Social Work and Arts, Charles Sturt University (NSW Australia); is the President of the International Consortium for Social Development; and is the founding Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Community and Social Development published by SAGE. He has over 35 years of experience in social work education, research and practice in Australia and India. He has implemented both national and international research projects. Prof Pawar has authored over 160 publications, including more than 20 books and monographs. He has also received several honours and awards.

Prof Antoinette Lombard

Biography

Antoinette Lombard is professor in Social Work and head of the Department of Social Work and Criminology at the University of Pretoria. She has published widely in social development and developmental social work. She represents the International Association for Schools of Social Work (IASSW) on the tripartite (IASSW; IFSW and ICSW) Taskforce of the Global Agenda for Social Work and Social Development, and coordinates the Global Agenda in the Africa region. Among her awards is the James Billups International Social Development Leadership Award of the International Consortium for Social Development, and a national award from the Minister of Science and Technology as the second runner up for the 2015 Distinguished Women in Science Award (WISA) in the category Humanities and Social Sciences. She is a rated researcher at the National Research Foundation in South Africa and a member of the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAF).

Prof Leila Patel

Biography

Leila Patel is professor of Social Development Studies and holds the South African Research Chair in Welfare and Social Development, University of Johannesburg. Leila is the founding director of the Centre for Social Development in Africa (CSDA) from 2004 -2018. She has published widely on issues of social development in South Africa and internationally and is the recipient of both national and international awards. In 2020, she received the National Research Foundation’s Science for Society Gold Medal Award (2020) and Katherine Kendell Memorial Award (2020) for distinguished scholarship and for her contribution to social work education and social development. Her research interests include social welfare policy, poverty and hunger, social protection, gender, care, the social services and children, youth and families. She has wide experience in academia, research, teaching and fulfilled various roles in government, civil society and private sector social involvement initiatives. She was South Africa’s first director general of social welfare after apartheid and has played a leading role in the development of welfare policy in South Africa. Her forthcoming edited volume will be published by Edward Elgar titled Social Protection and Social Development in the Global South.

Prof Tshilidzi Marwala

Biography

Prof Tshilidzi Marwala currently serves as the Vice Chancellor and Principal of the University of Johannesburg. He is a Mechanical Engineer and has become internationally renowned for his work on the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Prof Marwala has published 13 books and monograms, over 50 book chapters and over 40 journal articles. His work has been cited by many organizations including the International Standards Organizations (ISO) and NASA. Marwala collaborates with researchers in South Africa, the United States of America, England, China, France, Sweden and India.
In this role as the leader of the university he has led UJ to climb the university rankings locally and internationally and has positioned the university as a leader in the area of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. He has received numerous awards including the National Research Foundation’s President Award, the Order of Mapungubwe Bronze and the Academy of Sciences for South Africa Science for Society Gold Medal award.

Prof Kammila Naidoo
Dean of the Faculty of Humanities

Biography

Kammila Naidoo is Executive Dean and Professor of Sociology at the University of Johannesburg. She has taught at various South African universities such as UDW, UNISA and UP. Her published works are primarily in the areas of gender relations, family, and gender-based violence. She has served as a journal editor of the South African Review of Sociology and guest editor of journals such as Sage Open and Development Southern Africa. Apart from managing the Faculty of Humanities, she participates in large-scale research, supervises postgraduate students, and sits on review panels, both for universities and institutional bodies.

Mrs Zanele Mbek

Biography

Mrs Mbeki is Founder of the WDB Group. The WDBTrust (www.wdbtrust.co.za) is the sole shareholder a Women’s Investment Company WDB-IH (www.wdbih.co.za) whose role is to promote women business leadership and to create revenue streams in support of the WDBTrust programmes.

She studied Social Work in South Africa (Wits University) and postgraduate studies in Social Policy and Administration at the (London School of Economics) and Social Work Fellowship at (The London Institute for Social Work Training). She completed her residency for a doctoral degree at the Brandeis University Heller School for Social Policy and Management in the USA.

In 2014, she was recipient of the International Women’s Forum (IWF) ‘Women Who Make a Difference’ Award; and at the University of Johannesburg she received The Ellen Khuzwayo Council Award for her contributions to the Social Upliftment and Development of the Poor and the Marginalized Especially Women. In 2016 she received The Kagiso Trust Lifetime Achievement Award as well as the WDB Investment Holdings Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2017 she received the World Economic Forum (WEF) Crystal Award for Social Entrepreneurship;
The Nelson Mandela University honoured her with the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (honoris causa) in 2020

Prof Armando Barrientos

Biography

Armando Barrientos is Professor Emeritus of Poverty and Social Justice at the Global Development Institute at the University of Manchester in the UK. His research interests focus on the linkages existing between welfare programmes and labour markets in developing countries, and on policies addressing poverty, vulnerability, and population ageing. His work has been published widely, including articles in World Development, Global Social Policy, International Journal of Social Welfare and Journal of Development Studies. His most recent books are ‘Social Protection for the Poor and Poorest’ (2008, edited with D. Hulme, Palgrave); ‘Just Give Money to the Poor’ (2010, with J. Hanlon and D. Hulme, Kumarian Press); ‘Demographics, Employment and Old Age Security: Emerging Trends and Challenges in South Asia’ (2010, edited with Moneer Alam, MacMillan), and ‘Social Assistance in Developing Countries’ (2013, Cambridge University Press).
